Hola from Tidal Wave Surf Academy here in Tamarindo, Costa Rica!
As a local surf instructor and owner, I get asked all the time, "When's the best time to travel to Tamarindo, Costa Rica ?"
Well, the truth is, it depends on what kind of experience you're chasing.
Tamarindo offers incredible weather and waves year-round, but each season has its own unique charm.
Tamarindo Beach is situated in the Guanacaste province, known for its relatively dry climate compared to other parts of Costa Rica. Like the rest of the country, Guanacaste experiences two distinct seasons: the dry season and the wet season. However, its climate tends to be drier and receives less rainfall compared to other regions in Costa Rica.
Dry Season (December to April): During the dry season, which typically spans from December to April, Guanacaste enjoys clear skies, abundant sunshine, and minimal rainfall. Temperatures are usually hot and consistent, with daytime highs often reaching into the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit (around 30-35 degrees Celsius). This period is ideal for beach activities, outdoor adventures, and exploring the region's natural attractions.
Wet Season (May to November): The wet season in Guanacaste, from May to November, brings increased humidity and rainfall. Afternoons often see brief but intense thunderstorms, which help to refresh the landscape and maintain its lush greenery. Temperatures remain warm, with daytime highs typically ranging from the mid-80s to low 90s Fahrenheit (around 28-33 degrees Celsius). Despite the rain, mornings and early afternoons can still offer sunny intervals for outdoor activities. The most rainy months are September and October, which can have rain in large amounts of the day.
Sun-Kissed Shores and Consistent Swells: December - April
This is our peak season, and for good reason! These months boast near-perfect weatherĀ with minimal rain, sunny skies, and calm, consistent waves. It's the ideal time for beginners to learn and intermediate surfers to hone their skills. The town comes alive with a vibrant atmosphere, and you'll find plenty of activities and events happening. Be prepared for higher pricesĀ and larger crowds, though.
Shoulder Season Savings and Sunshine: May - July & November
If you're looking for a balance between affordability and good weather, consider the shoulder seasons. May through July offers fewer crowdsĀ and slightly lower pricesĀ while still boasting plenty of sunshine. You might encounter some afternoon showers, but they usually clear up quickly, leaving stunning rainbows in their wake. November is another great shoulder month, with comfortable temperaturesĀ and less rainĀ compared to the green season.
Enjoy The beauty of the Green Season : August - October
The green season brings abundant rain, transforming the landscape into a beautiful green paradise. While the waves can get choppier during this time, experienced surfers can find some epic challenges. Additionally, accommodation prices drop significantly, and you'll practically have the beaches to yourself.
Bonus Tip: The "Secret Season"
May and June offer a hidden gem for those seeking the perfect wave. Known as the "secret season", these months often see consistent swellsĀ and fewer crowdsĀ compared to the peak season.
No matter the season, Tamarindo has something special to offer.Ā So, when deciding the best time to visit, consider what kind of experience you're looking for: consistent sunshine, affordable prices, epic challenges, or a taste of the local culture.
